Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31. Too many views have been expressed about the significance of this celebration regarding its pros and cons as well its significance in daily life.
It is important in this regard to delve into this annual celebration and assess it meaning and reflection on humanity. Halloween and its roots in witchcraft and Druidic paganism are undeniable. It dates back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, namely the Celts who lived 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to Earth.
In other words, this celebration has no Christian association as it has something to do with anything other than the noble Christian faith. Thus, Christians should not celebrate Halloween in its capacity as a devil’s holiday, and definitely not a Christian observance.
It is said that Anton LaVey, the founder of the church of Satan, himself declared that by dressing up, either by wearing a costume or by coloring oneself in celebration of Halloween is tantamount to worshipping the devil and signifies that one allows Satan to own oneself. He, furthermore, asserted that when one adopts the pagan practices, one subconsciously dedicates oneself to the devil. He also took joy in Christians who take part in the tradition, saying, "I am glad that Christian parents let their children worship the devil at least one night out of the year." It is to be admitted that when the one who dresses up even as an angel or a mermaid for Halloween gives the devil the legal rights to change one's identity.
With some Christians in the world celebrate Halloween while believing that there’s no problem celebrating it, it is to be ascertained that Christians are taught to be the light of the world. The Holy Bible says, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly father." (Matthew 5:14-16) Consequently, Christian believers have the moral responsibility to educate their children regarding the evil that comes with Halloween costumes.
Furthermore, the Holy Bible states, "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8) When we walk in the steps of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, we are definitely delivered from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, consequently why then do we return to Satan’s kingdom and celebrate Halloween after having been set free?
Another outstanding relevant point is that as Christians we are warned not to participate in any celebration of evil as we are told “Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.” (3 John 1:11) Once we admit that the "Lord is my light and salvation, whom shall I fear" (Psalm 27:1) we can feel assured that "He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil. (Psalm 23: 3-6)
