A memoir of a happy Syrian family

We are a happy family. We live in a small tent. We came from Syria to Jordan seeking safety and a happy life. We thank the Lord all the time for what He has offered us. We watch television programs including the "The Neighborhood Door'' serial, Turkish films… as well as newscasts so as to know what is going on around us...

Our mother cooks our meals outside the tent. Do not ask us about the menu. It is quite normal. Our father works day and night. He entertains us before going to bed.

In the outside world, parents imagine flocks of sheep and start counting them to their children before bedtime.

In the internal world of the tent, our father informs us about the number of people wounded and killed in our country. We do thank God for the blessing of life. From time to time, he enumerates the killed and wounded in the Jordanian weddings... especially among children.

You might assume that we complain about the lack of air-conditions… We would be happy if you believe us when we tell you that happiness does not come from outside the tent… rather from within the tent…

In the context, poet Mahmoud Darwish said:
As you go home, your home, think of others
Do not forget the people who live in tents

This implication of this, which many are not aware of, is: As you return home haunted by your problems and wars at your own home, namely the civil wars… as you return home feeling that your home has turned into hell and that paradise exists outside your home… do think about the others…who live in tents because they, namely we, find happiness in the tent and not outside it.

Peace be upon you ...
O father, do continue the discourse...
