Lord Jesus Christ possesses a superior name

Of the angels He says, “Who makes His angels winds, and His ministers a flame of fire.”
–Hebrews 1:7

Not only does Jesus possess a superior name and is a superior object of worship to the angels, but He also rules over a superior kingdom. Look at Hebrews 1:7: “And of the angels He says, ‘Who makes His angels winds, and His ministers a flame of fire.’” In this verse, angels are likened unto wind and fire. What did the writer mean by that? He was saying that angels flit about from here and there to do the will of God.

The angels move about like wind and flames. In contrast, look at how the writer described the Son of God: “But of the Son He says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever’” (1:8). Unlike the angels who flit about from here to there, Jesus Christ is seated on His throne and reigning forever.

And not only that, but look at how verses 10 through 12 describe Jesus: “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands; they will perish, but You remain; and they all will become old like a garment, and like a mantle You will roll them up; like a garment they will also be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not come to an end.”

One day Jesus is going to roll up this present Heaven and earth like an old garment and cast it away forever. Jesus Christ will rule forever over a superior kingdom.

Jesus is superior to the angels because He will one day enjoy a superior victory. “But to which of the angels,” Hebrews 1:13 says, “has He ever said, ‘Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet’?” No place in Scripture ever says that angels will one day rule with God the Father. But one day Jesus is going to rule over this entire universe.

Guess what? One day you and I will be ruling with Him. That is why we are so much better than the angels. Revelation 4 gives us a picture of God seated on His throne in Heaven. And verse 4 says that around God’s throne are 24 more thrones–the thrones of the elders, which represent the Church. No angels will ever be on thrones judging mankind. But the Bible says you and I, as fellow heirs with Jesus Christ, will one day rule the universe. The Bible is clear: Jesus is superior to the angels because one day He will enjoy a superior victory.

The book of Hebrews reminds us that instead of worshipping the angels who minister to us, we instead should worship the Lord Jesus Christ, who directs the angels for our benefit. Why? Because Jesus possesses a superior name, He is a superior object of worship, He rules over a superior kingdom, and because one day with Him we, too, will enjoy a superior victory.
