Belgium’s bishops say they are “dismayed”, while airport chaplains are all available to offer spiritual support to those in need of it.
Belgium is under attack. Two explosions hit Brussels’ main airport, Zaventem at around 8 o'clock this morning. At least one of the blasts was caused by a suicide bomber. There were three explosions in the central Arts-Loi, Schumann and Maelbeek metro stations, just a stone’s throw away from the EU institutions. Belgium’s bishops immediately expressed their “dismay” and “anguish” at these tragic incidents and urged prayers for those affected by the bombings,” SIR news agency reports.
The attacks come just days after the manhunt which led to the capture of Salah Abdeslam, who was wanted in connection to the Paris attacks on 13 November.
Fr. Tommy Scholtes, press office director of the Belgian Bishops' Conference, said prelates “share the anguish of thousands of travellers and their families, aviation staff and the rescue teams that find themselves once again on the front line. They entrust this whole new dramatic situation, and especially the victims, to prayer.”
The Bishops’ Conference also informed that all airport chaplains are at work.
